Energy at CERN

Abstract

Throughout Europe people have been asked to limit their consumption of energy and CERN as a European organization must make its contribution.Energy at CERN is used to create the fields in our magnets, turn our motors, supply our electronics, our control systems and computers as well as lighting our offices and our canteens,, In another form it is used to heat or climatize our working areas.At all levels of our activity up till now, energy has been liberally used.However, the simple gesture of switching on a light, turning over a machine, starting up an engine takes on a new significance and forces us to appreciate its true value.Whilst recognizing the richness that we enjoy and equally the vulnerability of our situation, everyone is asked whoever he is and whatever his function, to keep in mind the real value of all forms of energy.It is by the combination of everyone's effort in tasks that range from the mo st simple to the most esoteric that we shall get through the present crisis.
